A 14-year-old boy died recently in an accidental self-inflicted shooting. A family member at the scene said the victim had been staying at the home when he found a gun, picked it up, and started playing with it. The family member said the boy accidentally shot himself moments later. The teen was brought to the hospital, where he died. It’s sad that tragic incidents must happen like this for us to be aware of steps we need to take to be responsible gun owners and making sure that we have our guns properly secured.

While gun ownership among adults is common, children and teens are often curious about firearms. Parents having conversations with their children about gun safety, regardless of whether guns are present in their home, or not, could prevent similar incidents from occurring.

Safe handling of firearms is not just a personal responsibility—it’s a crucial obligation to everyone in your household and community. Educating family and friends about safety and secure storage can prevent tragedies before they happen. Sharing this vital information doesn’t have to be intimidating; using engaging stories and vivid illustrations, especially with young people, helps the message resonate and encourages open conversations about what to do if they ever encounter a firearm. By making safety education accessible and memorable, we empower those we care about to make safer choices and protect lives.
